HISTORY OF PALINURO

Someone thinks that name “Palinuro” derives from the name of Enea’s pilot who falled in the sea because he was too sleepy. Some others instead think that it derives from Greek: Palinouros, composted by: “palin” and “ouros”. In the Ulysse’s Odissea “palin” means “against”, “contrary”, “that turn sand comes back”. While “ouros” means “storm”, “wind”. In the end Palinuro is a designation of tempest. In fact wind often dominates Capo Palinuro, causing violent tempests and so it’s very probable that Greeks navigators sailing Tirreno sea give it its name. Many archaeologically discoveries attest the presence of an ancient civilization in the past. Some of this discoveries (like coins) were recovered in a sepulchre in 1933 on the coasts of Palinuro, in a place called “Le Saline” (The Salt-mine) and they were dated IV and VI century a.c. History of Palinuro is connected to history of town Molpa that rised on an high headland, the only things that remain are two ruins: a castle and the Church of Saint Giuliano. Rinaldi Palace was a part of Prince of Centola and Marchioness of Pisciotta’s feud until 1700 d.c. Then the feud was bought to Rinaldi family. In 1814 was one of King of Naples’ (Gioachino Murat, Napoleon’s brother-in-law) residences. After pestilence in 1656 a big part of population dead and Palinuro was encroached by many criminals. Blue sea of Palinuro invites to sail unpolluted coast where is possible to discover uneven inlets, wonderful beachs, beautiful bays and amazing marine coves (Blue Cove and Sulphuric Cove, the most popular).
